Eighth-grade science students calculated the speed of vehicles on Hwy 69 in front of Southwest on Tuesday. Students measured the distance of 100 meters, using the trees as reference points they measured the time it took for cars to pass over the 100 meters. Students than calculated the speed of the vehicles by taking the distance divided by time.
In addition, Officer Jay Crabtree put his patrol car in position so his radar would record how fast the cars where going. Students than compared their calculated speeds to the radar speeds. This activity meets the Minnesota standard benchmark that the student will use a frame of reference to describe the position and speed of an object.
