OWATONNA &8212; Both the Albert Lea boys&8217; and girls&8217; hockey teams picked up important wins at Owatonna Tuesday night.
The No. 12-ranked girls downed the Huskies 4-3 in overtime while the boys won 5-2.
The 11th-ranked boys avenged a 3-2 loss earlier in the season to the Huskies and are now in first place in the conference with an 11-1 record.
&8220;To be totally honest with you, I thought it was pretty ugly,&8221; said Tigers head coach Roy Nystrom. &8220;I just didn&8217;t think the game was well played on our part despite the win. But I guess I would rather win and play ugly than lose and look good.&8221;
The Tigers took a 2-1 advantage into the third and final period before disposing of the Huskies with three goals from Jared Huges, Chris Dokken, and Jared Bowman to seal the victory.
Goal scorers for the Tigers were Hughes with two, Bowman, Adam Royce, and Dokken.
A.L. is now 15-3 overall and have won seven consecutive games by a combined score of 48-11.
The girls&8217; win keeps them in the hunt for a top three finish in the Big Nine as Amy Gackstetter netted the game winner in extra time off assists from Lauren Klick and Jenna Christensen.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead getting their first tally from Gackstetter and Katie Nelson followed up with another goal to make it 2-0 Albert Lea.
Sophia Jepson would add the third goal, but the Huskies would counter with two goals in the second period and one more in the third to force overtime.
Both teams face Faribault on Thursday.
