GIBBON &8212; Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop broke open a close game with United South Central in the third quarter to win 28-12 Wednesday.

USC went into the locker room trailing just 14-6, but GFW opened the third quarter with a time consuming drive that led to a score. That was followed up with a Rebel interception which GFW turned into another score and a 28-6 advantage.

&8220;They had about an eight-minute drive to open the third quarter then we throw an interception and they score on the next play,&8221; USC head coach Brent Schimek said. &8220;That&8217;s 14 points in two plays.&8221;

The Rebels would score in the fourth quarter when quarterback Riley Swearingen hit Tom Voigt on a short pass that he tuned into a 43-yard score.

GFW opened up the scoring in the second quarter with a 90-yard TD run. However, USC responded with a 1-yard effort by Swearingen to cut the lead to 14-6.

Because of the rainy, muddy conditions neither team was able to throw the ball with much success. USC had 120 yards rushing on the night while GFW had 280.

USC (1-7) will travel to New Richland Tuesday to face the top-seeded Panthers in the first round of sections. The game is a rematch of last year&8217;s section contest won by New Richland.
