Editorial: Schools back in session; drive with care

Published 12:00 am Sunday, September 2, 2007

Come tomorrow morning, our streets will be bustling with the activity of back to school.

Crossing guards will be back on street corners. School buses will be out in force, using their flashing lights and stop arms. There will be more pedestrians and bicyclists.

Since children do not always following the rules of the road, motorists needed to exercise a heightened awareness in and around a school zone. Potential hazards are much easier to perceive when driving a car at or below the speed limit.

Follow these simple suggestions to help make school zones safer for everyone.

– Don&8217;t speed.

– Don&8217;t impede traffic by dropping children off in the middle of the street.

– Don&8217;t double park.

– Don&8217;t block intersections or driveways if you park your vehicle.

– Don&8217;t make U-turns.

– Always make sure your children are wearing seatbelts when transporting them to and from school.

If we all keep on our guard, the back-to-school experience will be a pleasant one for all involved.
