Mayoral term-change petition inching toward circulation

The petition seeking a change in Albert Lea’s mayoral terms may soon be able to circulate after its promoters make a few small changes to the document.

That was the consensus Monday evening from the Albert Lea Charter Commission when presented with the preliminary City Charter language amendment and petition form.

The commission met to verify that the necessary paperwork was in order and procedures were followed before the petition would begin to circulate.

Albert Lea City Attorney Lee Bjorndal said the commissioners looked at whether the proposed amendment was clear and if the procedure being followed met statutory requirements.

The commissioners OK’d the petition committee to meet with Bjorndal and get the final changes worked out.

A form also needs to be notarized for each of the five people seeking signatures, stating that the people obtained the signatures and followed procedural guidelines.

Bjorndal said in a matter of one to two weeks, the petition could be ready to be circulated for signatures.

The amendment would change Albert Lea’s mayoral terms from two to four years.

There need to be 5 percent of the registered voters in the city from the last state election to sign the petition.

Bjorndal said if enough signatures are obtained the issue will go on the general ballot in November 2012.

If the term change is approved, it would become effective for the mayor elected in November 2014.
