Arnold Schember

Arnold James Schember, 81, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at St. John&8217;s Lutheran Home, Albert Lea.

The memorial service for Arnold will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Jay Dahlvang will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Olaf Cemetery, New Richland. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Bonnerup Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Arnold was born in New Richland on Dec. 7, 1925, the son of George and Mary (Sullivan) Schember Sr. He was a 1944 graduate of New Richland High School (where he had been a sports cheerleader), attended one year at Wartburg College, and was a graduate of Minnesota School of Business. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy from 1944-46 and during the Korean Conflict he was recalled and served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-52 where he was stationed in Bainbridge Island, Wash.

On Nov. 28, 1947, Arnold was united in marriage with Eleanor Fischer in New Richland. They are members of Salem Lutheran Church where Arnold served as usher, Sunday School Superintendent and taught acolytes and crucifers.

Arnold worked at Wilson and Company for many years and part time for Maid Rite. While his son was little, Arnold was a Cub Scout leader. He was well known as a recycler of cans and will fondly be remembered for his kind and generous nature.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Albert Lea; two children: Norell Wood of Minnesota Lake, and Danny (Valerie) Schember of Ellendale; four grandchildren: Amy Wood (Brian) Thomas of Des Moines, Iowa, Heidi Wood (Christopher) Olson of Maple Grove, Summer (Wayne) Schultz of Medford, and

Brian (Heather) Schember of Clarks Grove; four great-grandchildren: Cody Schultz, Arianna Volkmann and Eva and Gabriel Thomas; four godchildren: James Pichner of Faribault, Troy Hall of Savanna, Ga., Kim Paulson Luhring of Albert Lea, and Ted Willette of San Diego, Calif.; special friend, Anne Hermanson (Mike) Smith of Brooklyn Park; one brother, Curtis (Carol) Schember of St. Olaf Lake; one sister, Deloris (Glea) Hyland of Rockford, Ill.; sister-in-law, Ruth Fischer of New Richland; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary; one brother, George Jr.; one sister, Marion; son-in-law, Dean Wood; and an unborn grandchild.
