RED WING &8212; The USC/AC boys&8217; and girls&8217; track and field teams competed at the True Team Section 1AA Meet at Red Wing Tuesday with some good results. The boys finishing second to Plainview-Elgin-Milville, and the girls finished 10th in their competition.
&8220;Everything considered, I was pleased with our girls&8217; performance,&8221; USC/AC head coach Kent Viesselman said. &8220;Our girls&8217; team is very young, after graduating nine seniors last spring, and (section) AA is definitely a step up in the quality of competition. But I was very pleased with the way our girls competed.&8221;
Top finishers for the Rebels included second place finishes by Andrea Allis in the triple jump and Ciara Christenson in the 300 hurdles and high hurdles. Taylor Allis (800)
and Sarah Schultz finished third in their specialties.
&8220;We lack depth, especially in the sprints,&8221; Viesselman said, &8220;and that&8217;s what True Team is all about.&8221;
The boys put together one of their better team performances of the season in finishing second to a talent-laden team from
newly consolidated
Plainview-Elgin-Milville. A year ago, Plainview won the State Class A True Team meet, and last summer, they consolidated with Elgin-Millville, another Class A team with a rich track tradition.
&8220;I look for PEM to be very competitive next week at the State True Team Meet,&8221; Viesselman said. &8220;They are a very solid, balanced team.&8221;
PEM and USC/AC are by far the two smallest teams in the section. The combined enrollments of USC and A-C is a little under 400 in the top three grades and PEM is about the same. True Team Class AA is made up of schools whose enrollments are between 350 and 970.
The Rebels were able to pick up a couple of first place finishes. Jesse Courrier finished first in the discus with a throw of
161 feet, while the newly-constructed
4×200 team of
Jake Elmer, Jordan Stenzel, Jordan Haroldson, and Bryan Hauge won their event.
Other top finishes included second place finishes by Stenzel (200), Jon Leland (long jump),
Courrier
(shot put) and Amos Bessler (high jump).
&8220;One of the highlights of the meet for me was the continued improvement of our 4×800 team. They&8217;ve cut 18 seconds off their time in the last two weeks. I was pleased with all our relay performances, with all four of our relay teams finishing in the top three,&8221; Viesselman said.
Tiger boys do well
FARIBAULT &8212; The True Team Meet in Faribault on Wednesday resulted in some strong performances for the Albert Lea boys&8217; track team.
The distance runners and jumpers were the groups with the greatest improvement.
Senior captain Levi Budd had two outstanding performances in the 800 and 1,600 finishing 11th and 12th, respectively.
Ethan Marquardt doubled in the 1,600 and 3,200 and had personal best times in both.
Junior Isaac Brandt had a four-inch personal best in the high jump and cleared 5 feet, 8 inches, and Richie Needham improved his best long jump by over a foot when he jumped 18 feet, 8 inches. Taylor Ngo also had a personal best in that event jumping 17 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
The 4×400 team of Christophe Collard, Louie Grossman, Richie Needham and Matt Tiegs continues to drop time. They ran a 3:38.67 which beats last year&8217;s best time by over 10 seconds.
