Memorial services for Alfred H. Smidt, age 87, of New Richland were held on Saturday, May 5, 2007, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, New Richland. Pastor Phil Lewison officiated. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Alfred died on Thursday, May 3, 2007, at the New Richland Care Center.

Alfred Henry Smidt was born on Aug. 12, 1919, in Britt, Iowa, the son of Henry and Agnes (Johnson) Smidt. He attended country school in Iowa. The family moved to the New Richland area where Alfred has been farming most of his life. On May 27, 1953, Alfred was united in marriage to Fern Kofstad in Pine Island. He drove a school bus for New Richland schools and did custom corn shelling and baling hay for area farmers.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New Richland.

Alfred is survived by his son, Alan and wife, Shelly Smidt of New Richland and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son in infancy, and his wife, Fern.
