The Albert Lea City Council commended two Albert Leans Monday for their efforts made toward beautifying the city.

First, the council commended James Swenson, and Eagle Scout candidate, for his plans to construct a large raised flower bed, including a 3-by-4 foot limestone sign welcoming people to First Lutheran Church.

Swenson was to appear before the council to request a waiving of the $300 for

the conditional use permit application fee necessary for the project, but Second Ward City Councilor Larry Baker took the initiative to collect that fee so the council would not have to consider the request.

Albert Lea Fire Chief and Building Inspector Paul Stieler also presented resident Paul Neilson with

an award during the meeting. Stieler said Neilson bought a dilapidated house next to his own, and with no encouragement from the city, he made improvements to that property to better its appearance.

&8220;It not only made his house look nice, it made the whole neighborhood look nice,&8221; Stieler said.
