USC/AC girls win, boys second

MANKATO &045; The USC/AC girls&8217; track team won the Gopher Conference Indoor in Mankato Thursday.

The Rebels beat runner-up Mankato Loyola by more than 30 points while the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva girls took third place.

The Rebels and Panthers finished 2-3 on the boys&8217; side.

Alyssa Kerkhoff had a pair of wins for the Panthers taking the 55- and 400- meter races in 7.6 and 63.2, respectively.

Heather Schmit had NRHEG&8217;s other victory winning the 200 in 27.9.

Schmit would add a second place finish in the 55 low hurdles and

Kerkhoff was the runner-up in the 200.

Krystle Lonning threw 32 feet, 4.5 inches in the shot put to finish second and Alearah Newmann went 30&8217;9&8221; in the triple jump to finish second.

&8220;We are very pleased with how our girls performed,&8221; NRHEG co-head coach Duey Ferber said.

&8220;Many of our younger girls scored some valuable points.&8221;

The NRHEG boys got four wins from four different individuals.

Ryan Panuska tied a Panther record in clearing 11 feet in the pole vault to claim the win while Travis Wayne won the shot put with a best of 41 feet.

Derek Hansen tied for the top spot in the 55 meters at 6.9, and Blake Kerkhoff won the 400 in 53.6.

Kerkhoff also finished as the runner up in the 200 posting a time of 24.0 while Hansen was third in the long jump and Zac Swanson was third in the high jump.

&8220;Derek Hansen is a nice surprise and had a great meet,&8221; said Panther co-head coach Mike Weber.

&8220;Blake continues to preform strong as he did all last year. As a team the boys and coaches were quite pleased with our third place in the conference indoor.&8221;
