LAKE MILLS, Iowa &8212; In one of their better offensive games of the season in which they had three players in double figures and 11 put points on the board, the Lake Mills boys&8217; basketball team put a beating on Mason City Newman Friday night 74-51.
&8220;We played very well in the second and fourth quarters,&8221; said Bulldogs head coach Kyle Menke.
&8220;Mitch Storby had a great second half and Steve Hengesteg had a very solid all-around game.&8221;
The offense did come around eventually, but it was nowhere to be seen in the first quarter as LM trailed 10-5 after one.
But in the second the offensive fireworks started when the Bulldogs exploded for 27 points and held a slim 32-26 lead at the half.
The third quarter was played almost even with the Bulldogs out scoring Newman 18-15.
The Bulldogs came back in the fourth and poured in 24 points and allowed just 10 to coast to a 23-point win. Storby and Hengesteg led the Bulldogs with 14 points each while Michael Johnson added 11. NC&8217;s Dylan Allison led a scorers with 17 points on the night.
With the win the Bulldogs improve to 7-5 overall and are 5-3 in the North Iowa Conference. They are back in action Tuesday when they play host to West Hancock.
L.M. 49, Newman 41
The Lake Mills girls&8217; basketball team just got by Mason City Newman Friday night in a close contest 49-41. Jordynn Brackey led all scorers with 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds while
Megan Pederson collected yet another double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
Newman&8217;s weakness and the reason they fell by just eight points was its horrible free throw shooting, going just 9 for 25 at the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs led at every break but Newman kept the game close throughout. Lake Mills led by just five at the half, but widened that gap to 13 at the end of three.
A strong fourth quarter in which they scored 19 points pulled Newman to within eight at the buzzer, but it wasn&8217;t enough to deny the Bulldogs on this night and they hung on for the win.
