Congress has recently passed the Pension Protection Act, allowing people to withdraw funds from their IRA accounts and transfer them to a charity and avoid paying tax on the money.
In an effort to educate area residents about the new opportunity, United Way and Albert Lea Community Education have arranged for a set of informational meetings.
So far, the ruling is only for the 2006-07 tax years and individuals must be at least 70 1/2 years old to receive the tax break.
&8220;It&8217;s a great thing for people wanting to avoid taxes and help out their favorite charity,&8221; said Dave Bonnerup, United Way of Freeborn County director.
On Dec. 12, there will be seminars at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to educate local community members on the new opportunity.
Each seminar will have the same three components: The Accountant&8217;s Perspective, The Financial Institution Perspective and The Foundation/Endowment Perspective.
Jane Adams, professional accountant, will be presenting the accountant&8217;s perspective.
&8220;We believe this new IRA-to-charity rule contains opportunity for most over-age 70 1/2 retirees,&8221; said Adams.
