Weekend Planner: 9/11 events and sports tourneys highlight weekend

Hollandale Harvest Festival events highlight the weekend and will include car football, mud bog races and parades, among other events. Look for a story here.
There will also be events this weekend to memorialize 9/11. Another big event this weekend is the Ryan “Pie” Truesdell Memorial sports weekend, with events like the home run derby and volleyball tournament held at Snyder Field. Look to the Sports section for coverage of tournaments this weekend.
Friday
• Cruise Albert Lea Lake on the Pelican Breeze II at 6 p.m. Cost is $15, and reservations are needed by 4 p.m. by calling 507-383-2630.
Saturday
• The Albert Lea Farmers Market starts at 9 a.m. and goes until noon in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.
• Farming of Yesteryear event in Kiester starts at 9 a.m. Cost is $6, and children age 12 and under are free.
• Thorne Crest Retirement Community will hold the 5k Summer Roundup at 9 a.m. Cost is $15 on the day of the race.
• The Red Cross will hold the Whirlwind House Tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Homes will be featured that were rebuilt after damage from the June 17, 2010, tornadoes. Cost is $12, and tickets are available at Accents in Alden, Ben’s Floral & Frame Design, Celebration’s Party & Gifts, Hallmark in the Northbridge Mall and the Freeborn County Red Cross office. Coffee and cookies will be served at one of the five homes on the tour.
• Cruise the Albert Lea Lake on the Pelican Breeze II at 4 p.m. No reservations are needed and cost is $10.
• The Moose Club will host its third annual Tribute to 9/11 at 5 p.m. There will be a dinner of pulled pork and a street dance that starts at 8 p.m.
• The Southern Gateway Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will hold its annual banquet with a social hour beginning at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion. Cost is $50 for adults and $25 for spouses or $20 for those 17 and under.
Sunday
• Farming of Yesteryear event in Kiester will continue.
• A pancake breakfast will be hosted by the Albert Lea boys’ soccer team at the Moose Lodge from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Trinity Lutheran Church of New Richland will host a meatball dinner from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $9 for adults, $5 for children age 6 to 10, and free for children 5 and under.
• Cruise the Albert Lea Lake on the Pelican Breeze II at 1:30 p.m. No reservations are needed and cost is $10.
• A music recital featuring Cali Mowers, Kristen Hahn and Travis Nemec will be at 2:30 p.m. at Bancroft Creek Estates (part of Good Samaritan Society.)
• Several area churches have organized a 9/11 memorial service to be held at 7 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church.
