PINE CITY — Court documents say a Pine City boy told investigators he “snapped” and allegedly shot his stepfather in the head as the man slept.

The 41-year-old stepfather was transferred to a Twin Cities area hospital and is in critical condition after emergency brain surgery.

The Pine County Sheriff’s Office says it got a call early Wednesday about a man having trouble breathing. Emergency workers arrived to find the man had been shot in the head.

The 16-year-old stepson told investigators he was thinking about an incident two weeks earlier in which the man allegedly put his hands around the boy’s neck.

The stepson is in juvenile detention. He faces a juvenile petition accusing him of three charges, included attempted second-degree murder.
