Bud Chapman, of Minneapolis, won 2 and 1 over Ells Bennett to win the 33rd annual Shortstop Golf Tournament.

Grace Lutheran defeated First Baptist 5-4 to win the Church League softball tournament. Team members for Grace Lutheran included John Thorson, Ron Mathews, Dave Valdahl, Bill Schallock, Ted Larson, Dave Long, Don Tasker, Kent Peterson, Art Godtland, Francis Hawksford, Art Lindgren, Bill Tasker, LuVerne Godtland, Chris Johnson and Ells Godtland.

The Glenville Trojans football team opened their season with a 39-6 win over the Emmons Eagles. Larry Grinolds and Harry Anderson each ran for two touchdowns and Tom Struck for one. Doug Cipra scored the final touchdown on a 52-yard pass from Glen Jenson.

25 years ago — 1986

The Albert Lea girls’ swimming team lost to Austin 95-76. Winning for Albert Lea were Lynette Schoon in the 100-yard butterfly and the 400-meter freestyle relay team of Kim Christensen, Danielle Brady, Tammy Flom and Leah Mattson. Sarah Haried placed second in diving and set the school record with 202 points.

In Border League East football, Emmons defeated Lyle 12-8. Brian Yost scored on a four-yard run and Mike Sveen on a three-yard run. Yost gained 116 yards on 24 carries.

James Jones ran 174 yards for the Detroit Lions in their 13-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Katie Dooley and Amy Marka scored goals for the Albert Lea girls’ soccer team in a 2-1 win over Rochester John Marshall.

The United South Central football team defeated Martin County West 21-0 to remain undefeated at 2-0. Noel Johnson gained 104 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns.

New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva evened their season football record at 1-1 with a 27-0 win over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.
