Franklin H. Haugland, age 76, of Lake Mills, died Friday, July 21, 2006, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, Iowa, with military honors conducted by the Otto Chose Post 235 of the American Legion. Visitation will be on Monday, July 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main Street in Lake Mills and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Franklin Helland Haugland was born on March 24, 1930, in Eden Township, rural Thompson, Iowa, to parents Oscar and Ellen (Helland) Haugland. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minn., and was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. Frank attended school in Thompson, Iowa, through tenth-grade when he moved with his mother to Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1948.

Following his schooling, Frank worked at Decker Meat Packing Plant in Mason City. On Jan. 7, 1954, Frank enlisted in the United States Army, serving at Fort Lewis Washington, until he was honorably discharged on Jan. 6, 1956.

On Jan. 7, 1956, Franklin was united in marriage with Betty Kurth in Tacoma, Wash. Frank and Betty moved to Boulder, Colo., where they owned and operated a motel for several years. The couple then moved to Newport, Ore., and owned and operated an Oceanside motel.

In the late 1960’s, Frank and Betty moved back to Lake Mills, where Frank was co-owner of a shoe store, and he became the superintendent of the Rice Lake Golf Course in 1970. Betty passed away on March 8, 1994.

Frank was united in marriage with Wanda (Hermanson) Hanna on Dec. 2, 1995, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple resided at Rice Lake, rural Lake Mills, Iowa. Frank enjoyed and kept active at the Rice Lake Golf Course where he was the grounds keeper for 21 years. In 1986, Frank was awarded the Iowa Golf Association Superintendent of the Year, and he retired from his work in 1991. Frank kept busy owning Rice Lake Golf Cars and continued with this business until 2001.

In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking (especially Kumla), traveling, having coffee with his friends, and giving golf cart rides to his grandchildren. Above all, Frank had a keen sense of humor which he maintained throughout his illness.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda of Lake Mills, Iowa; step-children, Randy Hanna and his wife, Geralyn of Joice, Iowa, Tim Hanna and his wife, Kimberly of Lake Mills, Iowa, Beth Edwards and her husband, Grant of Albert Lea, Paul Hanna and his wife, Denise of Elbow Lake, Minn., and PFC Jay Hanna and his wife, Mandy of Mackenbach, Germany; grandchildren, Melanie Henderson and her husband, Aaron, Cory Hanna and his fiance Abby Larson, Chelsea Hanna, Nicole Hanna, Dayna Edwards, Zachary Edwards, Benjamin Hanna, Christopher Hanna, Jessica Dahl and her husband, Dean, Allison Hanna, Dylan Hanna, Blake Hanna and Tyler Hanna; one great-granddaughter, Kadence Henderson; two brothers, A. Oscar Haugland and his wife, Janet of DeKalb, Ill., and Dr. Stanley Haugland and his wife, Jean of West Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Connie Zakula and her husband,a Ray of Carlton, Minn.; sister-in-law, Agnes Haugland of Littleton, Colo.; brother-in-law, Roger Hermanson and his wife, Ruth of Lake Mills, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Ellen; his first wife, Betty; a brother, Joseph Haugland; and a daughter-in-law, Sheryl Hanna.
