The Sept. 7 meeting of the United Methodist Women was opened with music by JoAnn Seuser.
Perian Buringa from Hope circle introduced the Rev. Amy Jo Bur from St. Peter. She had been appointed to start a church in that community. The church is now “Good Samaritan United Methodist Church” based on service and justice. Bur gave an interesting account of their congregation’s activities and of their philosophy.
The business meeting was opened by President Marty Beckmann followed by the secretary’s report. Treasurer Ruth Vermedahl gave the Sept. 1 report with several pledges to be fulfilled.
Due to the length of the program regular reports were not given but Marcelle Emston reminded the group of the coffee to be served on Sept. 18 at St. John’s and asked for volunteers for help and for desserts.
A letter from Judy Hargrave was read about the need at Emma Norton Services. They are hoping to give each resident a new hairdryer and towel set for Christmas and are asking for help from the unit.
Judy Kary made a motion to support this request and the motion was passed. Circles will collect donations soon to be supplemented from the UMW treasury if needed. They are also always in need of paper products to be collected at the Southern Prairie annual gathering to be held in Albert Lea on Sept. 17. “God’s Closet,” a ministry of clothing and caring for residents of East St. Paul, are also asking for donations at the gathering. Details for the gathering with a morning coffee and noon luncheon are being planned.
Dr. Toby Thompson has purchased a table for the Emma Norton Services Annual Dinner to be held Oct. 10 at the Ramada Plaza in Minneapolis and has invited nine interested people to accompany.
A fall fundraiser question was raised by Norieta Rippentrop, after discussion it was decided to take this to circles for concrete suggestions.
The meeting was adjourned.
Preceding the meeting lunch was served by Mary Grace circle.
