Marvin R. Johnson, age 74, of North Ft. Myers, Fla., formerly of Scarville, Iowa, died Monday, April 24, 2006, at Coral Trace Hospice in Cape Coral, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa, with the Rev. Chris Fiske officiating. Burial will take place at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Otto Chose Post 235 of the American Legion.
Visitation will be Friday, April 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Marvin Rudolph Johnson was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Winnebago County, Iowa, to parents Bennie and Jeanette (Aske) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church, Vinje, Iowa. Marvin attended and graduated from Scarville High School. Following his graduation, Marvin helped his dad and brother farm in rural Scarville until he entered the United States Army in January of 1953. Marvin served with the 521st transportation company in Alaska during the Korean Conflict, and he was honorably discharged from service on Dec. 23, 1954.
On Dec. 29, 1962, Marvin was united in marriage with Janell Faliede. To this union, two children were born: Dennis and Janeen. The couple made their home in Scarville for a brief time prior to moving to Rosemount, Minn. Marvin worked as the manager at Bunge Grain Company in Savage, Minn., for over 30 years, retiring in the late 1980s. Marvin moved to Florida, and in November of 1998, was united in marriage with Helene LeBlanc.
Marvin enjoyed a lot of hobbies including woodworking, golfing, gardening, and playing billiards. He and Helene were members of the Faith Assembly of God church in North Ft. Myers, Fla.
Marvin’s Iowa roots remained an important part of his life, as he traveled home as often as he could. While spending summers in Iowa and Minnesota, he loved to make lefse, go fishing, and enjoy a round of golf or two.
He will be missed by his family including his wife, Helene of North Ft. Myers, Fla.; son, Dennis Johnson of Lakeville, Minn.; daughter, Janeen Johnson of Albert Lea; stepson, Doug Krukowski and his wife, Jean of Waconia, Minn.; two step-daughters, Lisa Alte and her husband, Richard of Pensacola, Fla., and Karen Poirier of Ft. Myers, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; three sisters, Darlyne Engebretson of Vinje, Iowa; Gloria Langfald of Scarville, Iowa; and Ione Nelson and her husband, Norman of Forest City, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Eileen Sunde and her husband, Duane of Vinje, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Johnson; two brothers-in-law, Merle Engebretson and Cleo Langfald; a nephew, Mark Langfald; and two nieces, Marlene Engebretson and Lori Nelson.
