Simon Thompson, 97, of Albert Lea

The Funeral Service for Simon S. Thompson of Albert Lea will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, 2005, at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Pastor Dan Baker and Pastor Kent Otterman will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Albert Lea Veteran’s Organizations. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the church.

Simon died on Friday, Feb. 10, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Center. He was 97.

He was born on a farm near Hayward on March 21, 1908, the son of Seivert and Susie Thompson. He attended country school and then began working on the farm.

Simon served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in France and Belgium.

After he was honorably discharged from the service Simon returned to farming and he also did a lot of trucking.

He was united in marriage to Irene Subra on January 28, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

The couple moved to Albert Lea in 1960 where together they operated Thompson Board and Care for more than 23 years.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, and a past member of Oakland Lutheran Church where he was confirmed in Norwegian.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Eagles. He was an avid card player.

Children put the twinkle in Simon’s eye. He had the gift of putting children at ease with his great sense of humor and teasing manner.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene, two children: Wayne Thompson and his wife Linda and Albert Lea, and Wanda and her husband Tom Nystuen of Eagan, Minn.,

grandchildren: Jacob, Luke, Parker and Taylor Thompson of Albert Lea, Ellen, Anna, and Ryan Nystuen of

Eagan, Minn., sister: Mabel Larson of Albert Lea, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Doris Callahan of Albert Lea, Loren and Romelle Subra of Blair, Wis., Glenn and Ardys

of Marion, Iowa, Lila Martin of North Carolina, George

and LaVonne Herman of Rochester, Minn., Lorraine Monahan of Winona, Violet Bicknese of Hudson, Wis., Marlyn Subra of West Union, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ervin, Oscar, Lewis, Walter and sisters Josie and Naomi.
