This is a letter in response to the column by Scott Schmeltzer on Sept. 22 suggesting that Albert Lea varsity sports are dominated by female athletes. As one of the captains of the girls’ swim team, I appreciate the recognition you gave our female athletes.

However, I am bothered by the suggestion that our male athletes are in any way slacking in their sports. They may not be winning every game, but that does not mean they aren’t working just as hard. Yes, our girls have stepped it up and deserve their recognition, but that doesn’t mean our guys haven’t put in the same time and efforts.

Thank you for recognizing us female athletes, but here’s to recognizing all the Albert Lea athletes who have worked their butts off this season!
