Column: Local option sales tax the fairest way to support clean up

Published 12:00 am Monday, November 7, 2005

We’re voting yes for the sales tax on Tuesday. You should too.

Both my husband and I feel very privileged to have lived here for the last 18 months.

We made a personal choice to leave the cities and come to this beautiful town to reside in the home of our dreams.

And every single time we drive around Fountain Lake, we smile &045; instantly relaxing knowing that this is our community, our home, our lake.

As a reasonably new resident to Albert Lea, we already feel a deep sense of commitment to making our community a better place and helping in any way that we can.

We both believe strongly that voting for the local option sales tax is a decisive way we can help our community in its continued maintenance and support of one of our most important assets &045; our lakes.

The local option sales tax is the fairest way to support the need we have to clean our lakes.

This tax shares the burden of cost with all those that enjoy the lakes.

We’re not talking about a great deal of money on an individual basis, either.

Think about it &045; a nickel on a $10 purchase &045; that’s all.

The best part? We know where the money is going.

Please join us &045; vote yes for the local option sales tax Tuesday.

So many contributed to successful carnival

Thank you to all who made the Power 96 Halloween carnival a huge success!

Wow &045; what a turn out. I want to personally thank everyone who participated in the Power 96 Halloween carnival on Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Country Inn and Suites in Albert Lea.

A special thank you to our 16 room sponsors. They really went all out to make it a very festive event and were so willing to stay much longer than anticipated with the tremendous turn out.

Accentra Credit Union, American Residential, State Farm Nancy Vanderwaerdt, Thrivent Financial, Celebrations/Albert Lea Tailors, Laura Mae Gymnastics, St. John’s Lutheran Home, Green Mill, Trades and Labor Credit Union, Classic Reflections, Albert Lea Tribune, Starbucks, Premiere Video, Critters and More, United Employees Credit Union and MI Water Conditioning.

Thanks to Pepsi and Hardee’s for refreshments and to Parties Made Simple of Grand Meadow for providing games, cotton candy and popcorn. Thanks to Bob Miller the Magician for his amazing magic that seemed to magically make the wait seem a little shorter.

A huge thank you to Country Inn and Suites for allowing us to use their facilities to create a safe trick or treating environment for our kids.

And to their &8220;Wizard of Oz&8221; staff that made everything run smooth. Thank you to the Albert Lea Police and Fire departments and Sheriff Mark Harig for coming to talk to the kids about safe trick or treating.

And a special thank you to the public who attended and their amazing patience.

And thank you to all who voted for their favorite rooms. Starbucks won the first place plaque along with a one night stay in the room of their choice at Country Inn and Suites. United Employees Credit Union took second place and St. John’s Lutheran Home received third place.

You can sure bet we’ll be doing it again next year.
