Swimmers rally, fall short against John Marshall

ALBERT LEA &045;&160;Trailing by 25 points with four events left to go the Albert Lea girls’ swim team fought back with some strong efforts in the pool, but came up 10 points short to Rochester John Marshall, 95-85.

Amanda Walters picked up the win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.01 beating JM’s

second place finish to the wall by just over two tenths of a second.

Leah Matheson had a second on the rest of the field to take the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.21, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Rachael Hagen, Kaeli Wayne, Jackie Elwood and Walters took the top spot in 4:17.43 to give the Tigers wins in three of the last four events.

Samantha Cole had the team’s other victory on the night leading teammate Whitney Walters to

the wall in the 50 free with a time of 26.78.

Elwood also took second place in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 1:08.98.

Rachael Hagen finished as the runner-up in the 500 free with a mark of 6:15.98, while Cole just missed a her second sprint victory in the 100 free by a tenth of a second.

Wayne, Matheson, Cole and Walters battled hard in the 200 medley relay finishing just over a second off the winning time.

The 200 free relay team of Matheson, Walters, Elwood and Cole also swam to a second place finish.

The Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they host Mankato West at 6 p.m.
