Funeral services for Derek J. Olson, age 20, of Albert Lea, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Malinsky will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Derek died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, in Northwood, Iowa, from a drowning accident.

Derek James Olson was born on Sept. 27, 1984 in Albert Lea the son of Russell and Mary (Williamson) Olson. He attended the local school system and did various jobs throughout Freeborn County. He especially enjoyed working with electronics. He also enjoyed rock and roll and hardrock music. Spending time with his family, especially his nephew Michael and his many friends was of great importance to Derek. He also spent time drawing.

Derek is survived by his father, Russell Olson of Hartland; mother, Mary Olson of Glenville; his brother, Seth Olson; sister, Nara Olson and her son ; maternal grandmother, Evelyn Williamson of

Glenville; aunts and uncles: Dianne and husband Larry Roerish, Donald and Mary Williamson, Douglas Williamson, Addie and husband John Rust, Jim and wife Cindy Williamson, Dawn Knaack, Larry and wife Marlene Olson, Richard and wife Judy Olson and Janice and husband Leonard Saxson; and many cousins also survive Derek.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents:

Don Williamson and Dale and Esther Olson.
