Here are highlights in history for Sept. 30, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:
1989 — The Big Island Rendezvous was being held at Helmer Myre State Park.
1979 — After 50 years, Albert Lea’s Canton Cafe on South Broadway Avenue ceased operations. Ownership of the business passed from the Wong family to Jim Bergstrom and David Slope who would reopen the place with the name of Golden Parrot in November.
1939 — The Albert Lea High School Tigers football team defeated the Northfield Raiders with a score of 13-6 in a Big Eight Conference game.
