Makael Lunning rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns Friday, and Cody Scherff caught five passes for 99 yards and a touchdown as the Albert Lea Tigers football team won its first game of the season 33-13 at Winona.
The Tigers (1-4, 1-3 Big Nine) built a 25-0 lead before halftime and gained 432 yards of total offense compared to Winona’s (1-4, 0-4) 202.
“It was all fueled by a great week of practice,” Tigers coach Max Jeffrey said. “When you prepare to win, and we did this week, these are the results.”
Quarterback Ethan Abben was 6-of-9 passing for 133 yards before aggravating a foot injury that’s held him out of the lineup the past two weeks. Derek Burkard stepped in and threw for 96 yards and a touchdown on 5-of-7 passing.
Dalton Westerlund caught three passes for 91 yards including a 52-yard reception.
Jeffrey said Lunning played well on both sides of the ball. The junior running back scored on a 78-yard touchdown run, forced a fumble and recorded and interception.
The Tigers play next at 7 p.m. Friday against Mankato East (1-4, 1-3) in its Homecoming Week game at Hammer Field.
