The Glenville-Emmons legion baseball team advanced out of the first round of district playoffs with a 7-5 victory over Hayfield.
The win did not come without some drama as both teams put up big seventh inning numbers.
G-E went into the seventh with a 4-1 lead and tacked on three more runs for insurance.
Devin Kaasa got things started with a one out single and advanced to second with a stolen base.
Michael Greibrok put runners on first and second with a base knock, and both runners moved up a base on a defensive miscue on an Alex Hansen hit.
Josh Klunder’s suicide squeeze and Nathan Cooper’s single would score the three runs.
All of that offense proved to be necessary as Hayfield would mount a comeback plating four runs before Glenville-Emmons snuffed out the rally.
Hayfield had the bases loaded with one out when Kaasa got a bouncer back to the mound which he fielded and threw home for the second out.
G-E looked like it may have won the game as the catcher fired to first and appeared to get the runner for the double play, but the umpire called him safe extending the game.
Hayfield would take advantage of its second chance turning a triple and single into four runs before Glenville finally shut the door for good.
&uot;We haven’t been playing real good this summer so it was nice to get a full game of defense, good pitching and timely hitting when we reach this time of the season.
It is win or go home,&uot; said G-E head coach Louie Toulouse.
&uot;I told the kids not to let the call (at first base) affect them because that is just part of the game.
We were playing with a pretty full roster for one of the few times this season which allowed me to
play my more experienced kids.&uot;
Mike Yocom provided the big hit in Glenville’s three-run third getting a two out double to bring in two runs.
Glenville-Emmons will take to the road tonight to play Dodge Center at 7 p.m.
