Here are highlights in history for Oct. 3, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:

1991 — The fifth annual Big Island Rendezvous would be opening the following day at Myre-Big Island State Park.

1981 — Lawrence J. “Cap” Emmons, Albert Lea High School band director for over 40 years, died on the previous day at Naeve Hospital. He was one of the founders of the Big Nine Music Festival.

1951 — Elwood Jensen of Ellendale was one of the Minnesotans to attend the National Rural Youth Conference in West Virginia.
