The Lake Mills, Iowa, volleyball won its eighth North Iowa Conference Tournament title in nine years Monday with a 3-0 win over Forest City.
The second-ranked Bulldogs (34-0) won five straight matches in the two-day tournament in Forest City without dropping a set, increasing its individual games record to 78-1.
Morgan Fjelstad finished the tournament with 118 set assists, and Josie Brackey recorded team highs in kills (44) and service aces (7). Carlie Christianson had 32 digs, and Kelci Larson had 22 ace blocks.
After advancing to the semifinals on Saturday, the Bulldogs opened Monday’s action by defeating Osage 25-18, 25-11 and 25-20.
Bulldogs coach Jim Boehmer said the team got off to a slow start in Game 1 but had a quick tempo and handled the first ball well.
“We came in knowing we had to beat Osage and Forest City to win the title,” Boehmer said. “So it was crucial we start well against Osage.
“I think we did that, but Osage played very well and were able to compete point for point at times.”
Boehmer said the team had one of its best blocking nights against Osage with Christianson recording seven ace blocks.
“She changes games for us,” Boehmer said. “Christianson sets a great block on the rightside of our court. I was very pleased with our net play.”
The Bulldogs got off to a fast, aggressive start against Forest City in the finals, according to Boehmer, and played with a high energy level. Lake Mills built large leads in each game and won 25-15, 25-11 and 25-10.
Brackey notched 17 kills in the finals, and Fjelstad had 34 set assists. Hallie Erdahl had a team-high 10 digs, and Shelby Kuper, Larson and Catherine Adams each recorded three ace blocks.
The Bulldogs play again on Oct. 11 in a quadrangular at North Butler.
“We have some time to rest and improve this week,” Boehmer said. “We will look at what we need to do to get better and focus on next Tuesday.”
