Bert Veldman, of

Davenport, Fla., died of cancer on Thursday, June 16, 2005, at Good Shepherd Hospice, Auburndale, Fla.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 11755 Sherburne Ave., Becker, Minn., with the Rev. Brad Barr officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the services. A private family burial service will be held at the Maple Lake Community Cemetery in Maple Lake, Minn.

Bert was born July 16, 1937, in Albert Lea to Hemmo and Titia Veldman. He graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1956 and served in the Military Police Branch of the US Marine Corps in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 1956-1958. He attended Mankato State College and the Minnesota School of Business. On June 24, 1961, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Alm in Albert Lea. They lived in Minneapolis, Burnsville, Annandale, and Becker before residing in Davenport, Fla.

Bert worked for Minister’s Life and Casualty, St. Louis Park, and for Merck and Co., Plymouth, for 25 years before retiring in 1993.

Bert was a member of the church councils at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Burnsville, and at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Annandale. He was president and secretary of the Annandale Lion’s Club as well as board member of the Pleasant Lake Association. While in Annandale, where he resided for 22 years, he volunteered for community functions, Camp Courage events, and Little League and hockey programs.

In Becker, he served as president of the Pebble Creek Court Association. In his retirement years, Bert and his wife enjoyed spending six months in Minnesota and six months in Florida and traveling as well as golfing.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Hemmo and Titia Veldman; brother, Wilbur Veldman; sisters: Anne Wagner and Ella Hoogland; and nephew, Scott Veldman.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Davenport, Fla.; two children and their families:

Paul Veldman and wife Suzanne and children, Brett and Jackson, of Valrico, Fla., and

Lori Hogan and husband K. Joseph and children, Abby, Hilary and Nate, of Maple Lake, Minn.; and three brothers: Albert Veldman and William Veldman of Hollandale, and Peter Veldman of South St. Paul.
