There is no such thing as a home-pool advantage for the lady Tigers of Albert Lea.

Jon Schmitz’s squad dropped their fourth straight home meet of the season on Thursday with a 97-87 loss to Rochester Century.

Senior Galen Schulz and eighth-grader Lindsey Horesji led the Tigers (4-4, 3-4 Big Nine) with two individual wins a piece and a victory on the 200-yard freestyle relay.

“To beat this team it had to be a total team effort,” Schmitz said. “They’re so strong, they are going to finish 2-3-4 in everything. If we win an event and they finish 2-3-4, they outscore us 9-7.”

Schulz came from behind in the final 10 yards to win in the 200 freestyle. The senior leader propelled herself past Century’s Lexi Shin to win by .30 seconds with a time of 2:05.

Century (4-5, 2-1) was able to secure second through fourth in the event, giving them the point advantage.

“That was huge,” Schmitz said. “She did what she had to do. She didn’t win by much, but she did a great job coming from behind to win.”

Horesji backed up her senior counterpart with a victory in the 200 individual medley. The record holder outpaced the competition by more than two seconds, touching the wall in 2:16.42.

The eighth-grader returned in the 500 freestyle, covering the distance in 5:29.34, less than a second off of the team record in the event.

Schulz blew away the competition in the 100 freestyle. The Tigers’ leader sprinted the short distance in 56.40, Anna Anderson placed second in 58.19.

Horesji and Schulz were also victorious in the 200 freestyle relay. The duo teamed with Anderson and senior Morgan Field for the victory, touching the wall in 1:44.99.

“This is the best team I’ve ever been a part of,” Schulz said. “The girls work so hard every day, and I’m amazed and happy to be on this team.

“What a way to spend my senior year.”

Karli Kriewall dropped her first dual meet diving competition of the year. The junior had a great showing finishing, just two points away from her record with a 222.00, but was unable to hold off Century’s Adrianna Jacobs with a 224.00.

Albert Lea was out in support of breast cancer awareness during the meet. Each swimmer wore a pink swim cap in support of the cause.

The Tigers look to extend their undefeated road record to five straight victories when they travel to Winona next Tuesday.
