Editorial: Help neighbors during Food Share Month

Hunger is a crisis in America that faces every community. Its face is sometimes hidden, but the problem is very real.
March is Minnesota Food Share Month, a time when the work that food banks and food rescue organizations do in communities to help end hunger is highlighted.
This year, it is more important than ever that people who are able be willing to help others. The need in Freeborn County is ever increasing and it is becoming more difficult to meet that need.
The prices of food are increasing, fewer donations are being given and USDA products are being allocated at local food banks. In general, donations are down everywhere.
Local Scouts will be dropping off bags for their annual Scouting for Food Drive this weekend, then will return next Saturday to pick up bags local residents have filled with donations. What could be easier for sharing what we have?
Local food shelves, like the Salvation Army and the Ecumenical Food Shelf at First Presbyterian Church, take donations all year long.
We urge those who are able to help &045; in volunteering, donating food, or making a financial contribution &045; to do so.
The help can make an incredible difference in the lives of those without food.
Please be a good neighbor.
