Book sale starts today, continues Friday and Saturday
The Friends of the Albert Lea Public Library are holding a fall book sale starting today for members only. The sale today is from 4 to 7 p.m., and the cost to become a member is $5. The sale continues Friday from noon to 6 p.m. for anyone, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Saturday also features the bag sale where for $1 people can fill a bag with children’s books or for $3 adults can fill a bag with books. The book sale is held directly west of the lower level of the library in the City Center Garage off Fountain Street. The Friends of the Albert Lea Public Library fund summer events for children at the library, among other things.
Friday
• The Friends of the Albert Lea Public Library will hold a book sale from noon to 6 p.m. at the City Center Garage directly west from the library off Fountain Street.
• The Freeborn Genealogical Society will hold a fundraiser from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion in Albert Lea. Cost is $8.
Saturday
• The Albert Lea Farmers Market starts at 9 a.m. and goes until noon in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.
• The Friends of the Albert Lea Public Library book sale continues with a bag sale from 9 a.m. to noon at the City Center Garage directly west from the library off Fountain Street.
• The Flying Lea Disc Golf Club holds a disc golf tournament it is calling the Fall 45. It will make use of every basket in Albert Lea. The flighted tournament starts at Riverland Community College before moving to Bancroft Bay Park in the afternoon. Tee off is at 10 a.m., and the players meeting is ata 9:45 a.m. The entry fee is $20. Players of all skill levels can enter.
• Grace Lutheran Church will hold its 35th annual salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be hot barbecue and a large selection of salads. Cost is $7 and cookbooks will be on sale for $10.
• The Albert Lea Human Rights Commission and Paths to Peace of Albert Lea will host a free film festival at the Albert Lea High School auditorium. Films shown include “Shrek” in Spanish at 1 p.m., “Bullied” at 3 p.m., “Freeheld” at 4 p.m. and “The Visitor” at 7 p.m. The public is invited to any and all of the films.
• The Albert Lea Fire Department will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. at the fire station off Fountain Street. There will be displays, demonstrations and refreshments.
• The Party in Pink Zumbathon and silent auction will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Armory in Albert Lea. Cost is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
• The Knights of Columbus will hold Oktoberfest from 6 to 10 p.m. at 1002 S. Broadway Ave. in Albert Lea. Food served includes brats, sauerkraut, potato salad and German beer. The Alley Katz Band will perform and there will be polka and dancing. The public is invited.
Sunday
• The Albert Lea Alanon Society will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at 1005 Ulstad Ave. in Albert Lea. Cost is $5 for all you can eat.
• The Southeastern Minnesota Chamber Orchestra will kick off its 2011-12 season with a fall pops concert at 4 p.m. at the Albert Lea High School auditorium. The orchestra, under the direction of Brock A. Besse, comprises members from throughout southeastern Minnesota and are of various ages. The concert on Sunday will feature well-known selections including songs from “My Fair Lady,” “West Side Story” and others. Many selections will include Nikky Krautbauer, of Austin, on vocals. Tickets are available at Doyle’s Hallmark, Marshall Street Music and First Lutheran Church and are $8 for adults and $6 for seniors. There is no charge for students 18 years old or younger. All tickets are $10 at the door, or season tickets cost $30.
