Hazel Ruth Varner Van Wilgen Anderson, 88, Hollandale

A memorial service for Hazel Anderson, of Hollandale,

will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel, Albert Lea. The Rev. William Bankester will officiate. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Hollandale Cemetery, Hollandale.

Hazel died Monday morning at the Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea. She was 88 years of age.

Hazel Ruth was born Nov. 22, 1915, the daughter of Jacob and Laura (Walters) Varner in Odebolt, Iowa. The Varner family moved to the Hollandale area in 1927.

Hazel was united in marriage to John Tennis Van Wilgen on Dec. 20, 1933, in Hollandale. Together they lived and farmed east of Maple Island.Hazel was a cook at the Hollandale School for 25 years and was remembered fondly by the many students as &uot;Cookie.&uot; After her retirement, John and Hazel traveled to Alaska and wintered in Texas until John’s death in 1979. In 1981 she married Bill Anderson. They traveled and lived the winter months in Arizona. Hazel was a member of the Congregational Church of Hollandale.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Norma Hanson and her husband Raymond of Clarks Grove; son, John Henry Van Wilgen and his wife Janice of Hollandale; daughter-in-law, Sandy Van Wilgen of Garden Grove, Calif.; and grandchildren: Diane (Lowell Kuck), Dean and Dale (Denise) Hanson, Jody, Julie (Craig Hill), Jon (Penny), Jacquie and Jason Van Wilgen, and Larry, Doug, Jeff (Sandy) and Rick (Karen) Van Wilgen.There are 33 great-grandchildren and

two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters-in-law: Gertrude Wedel, and Hermina Van Wilgen; and brother-in-law, Evert Smith. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

From her marriage to Bill, Bill’s daughter, Avon Bennett; sisters-in-law: Lorna Anderson and Ellnora Willand; nieces and nephews; and special friends: Jack and Marlene DeVries.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents: Jacob and Laura Varner; parents-in-law: Tennis and Hendrika Van Wilgen; husband, John Tennis Van Wilgen in 1979; son, Gene Allen Van Wilgen in 2003; sisters, sisters-in-law

and brother, brothers-in- law: Mabel (Varner) and Archie Poyzer, Russell and Lola Varner, Marie (Van Wilgen) and Jack Loverink, Lydia (Van Wilgen) and John Waalkens, Tennis Van Wilgen, Art Wedel, Sharon (Van Wilgen) and Reed Lutes and Henrietta Van Wilgen Smith; and second husband, Bill Anderson, in 1999. From Bill’s family: Art Anderson, Malmon Anderson, Adrian and Martha Anderson, Wally Anderson and Rosciela Hagenson.

Hazel loved her family, faith and the bible. She also enjoyed going to the stock car races, cooking at the Hollandale School, travel and going &uot;south&uot; for the winter. The highlight of each week was the Sunday morning coffee parties and pot lucks in her &uot;eatin’ room&uot; with friends, relatives and neighbors.
