50 years ago — 1961

The Albert Lea football team defeated Minneapolis North 26-6. Sophomore Mel Stensrud gained 81 yards on 16 carries, and quarterback John Goodmanson threw for three touchdowns for the Tigers.

In Border League football, Kiester defeated Freeborn 20-7. Bob Seljeseth ran for two touchdowns, and quarterback Lowell Meyer threw a touchdown pass to Dave Rieke for the third score for Kiester.

25 years ago — 1986

Sophomore Mike Allen ran for 210 yards in 34 carries for Alden-Conger in its 35-0 victory over Ceylon. A-C, the fifth-ranked team in Class Nine-Man football, raised its record to 7-0.

The Albert Lea football team lost to St. Cloud Cathedral 15-9. Matt Sullivan scored on a 4-yard run, and Marc Eronen kicked a 21-yard field goal for the Tigers.

The Glenville volleyball team defeated New Richland-Hartland by scores of 15-6, 15-8 and 15-1. Briget Matter had two ace hits, four ace tips, seven ace serves and was 24-for-24 setting for Glenville. Glenville improved to 10-1 in the Gopher Conference and 11-3 overall.

Alden-Conger defeated Freeborn by scores of 15-12, 13-15, 15-11 and 15-11 to remain undefeated in the Border League with a 12-0 record. Deb Coughlin had 17 ace hits and Pam Dulas added 15 ace hits.

10 years ago — 2001

Tom Kelly announced his retirement as manager of the Minnesota Twins.

The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Winona by scores of 16-14, 15-7 and 15-13 and raised their overall record to 8-12. Jenny Vanderploeg had nine kills, Whitney Sorensen six, Beth Kolling six and Aubree Page five for Albert Lea.

The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team tied Rochester Mayo 3-3. Amy Mark scored two goals and Mariah Levison one for the Tigers.

Glenville-Emmons defeated New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva by scores of 15-13, 15-13 and 15-12. Alisa Rayman had 14 kills for G-E.
