Editorial: Give the children and their families hope

Published 12:00 am Wednesday, July 28, 2004

This weekend, residents of our area have an opportunity to give two critically ill youngsters a little hope.

Two benefits are planned.

On Saturday, people can help 4-year-old Trever Benneer, who suffers from Gardner’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes polyps and tumors, and aortic valve stenosis, a condition where the valve is very small and the heart works harder to pump the blood through. He’s had numerous surgeries, with another scheduled for Aug. 3. A benefit auction with food available for a freewill donation will begin at noon at Eddie’s Bar, 719 Marshall, Albert Lea. A fund has been set up at U.S. Bank in Albert Lea.

On Sunday, people can help Duane Lindquist of Lake Mills, Iowa, who suffers from leukemia. Dad’s Belgian Waffles will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lake Mills Community School. A freewill donation will be accepted. Live entertainment, featuring local talent, will begin at 1 p.m. There will be a live auction with many donated items, a silent auction and bake sale, as well as drawings for boy’s and girl’s bikes, a quilt, and a David Rottinghaus print.

Donations may be sent to the Duane Lindquist Crisis Fund, Citizens Community Credit Union, 311 N. Park, Lake Mills, IA 50450.

People never know when illness or another crisis will hit.

We urge those who are able to help these families and salute those who are working to bring them hope.
