Memorial services for Svend A. Svenningsen, age 92, formerly of Alden, will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the time of the service. Interment will be in the Carlston Cemetery,
Svend Aage Svenningsen died Friday, July 16, 2004, at the Ebenezer Luther Hall in Minneapolis.
Svend (known to his friends as Swan) was born on Nov. 13, 1911, in Denmark, the son of John and Anna (Nielsen) Svenningsen. The family immigrated to America around 1914. He graduated from the Faribault School for the Deaf in 1930. He attended Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., from 1930 to 1931. On Sept. 4, 1938, Svend was united in marriage to Stella Jensen in Clarks Grove. The couple owned and operated bakeries in Faribault and Albert Lea, and in 1947 they purchased the Alden Bakery from Horace Beach. The couple later purchased the former bank building in Alden where they operated the Alden Bakery until he retired in 1976. They moved to Albert Lea in 1995. Svend was a member of the Southern Minnesota Club for the Deaf and the Alden Seniors Club where he and Stella were crowned Senior King and Queen in 1990. Svend gained his U.S. citizenship in 1950 and was the 3000th citizen of Freeborn County. He enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings and being with his family.
Svend is survived by his sons: Norman and his wife Ruby Svenningsen of Florence, Ariz., and Harry and his wife Adeline Svenningsen of Casa Grande, Ariz.; daughters: Sharon Svenningsen of Manassas, Va., Ramona and her husband Curt Rush of Clearwater, Fla., and Kathy and her husband Eugene Stern of Owatonna; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and two brothers: Chris and his wife Mina Svenningsen of Wells, and Arnold and his wife Betty Svenningsen of St. Paul.
Svend was preceded in death by his wife, Stella; his parents; three brothers: Harry, Harvey and his wife Doris, and Martin; and two sisters: Alma and her husband Mike Larson, and Mary Svenningsen.
