Weekend Planner: Celebrating art event will feature local artists

Works of Rory Mattson, of Albert Lea, will be showcased and works from Lloyd Herfindahl, John Lacis and Stu Botten will be auctioned at the second annual Celebrating the Art & Artists event on Friday.
Other works to be auctioned will be from Steve Schwartz, Nancy VanderWaerdt, Bob Syverson, Terry Leas and Dick Kogel.
The event begins at 5 p.m. at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club and the public is invited to attend. Appetizers and a cash bar will be available, and a $5 donation at the door is suggested. Guests will be entertained with live music throughout the night.
Friday
• Ascension Lutheran will hold a youth burger basket fundraiser at the Albert Lea American Legion from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost is $8
• The Albert Lea Art Center’s second annual Celebrating the Arts & Artists will be held at 5 p.m. at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club. Last year’s event raised more than $3,500 for the art center, and this year the center will again have an art sale and auction.
• A fall bluegrass festival will be held at the Knights Inn in Albert Lea starting at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday
• The Albert Lea Farmers Market starts at 9 a.m. and goes until noon in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.
• The Southern Gateway Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will hold its fall Forkhorn Field Day, which is open to all area youth. Meet at Hy-Vee grocery store at 9 a.m. to follow the group and activities will last until about 2 p.m. Call Bob Ball at 507-402-3012 or Scott Millhouse at 507-383-1205 to sign up.
• The fall bluegrass festival at the Knights Inn will continue from 2 to 5 p.m.
• Octoberfest will be held at the Albert Lea American Legion starting at 4:30 p.m. The Alley Katz Band will perform from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be German beer specials and German schmorgishborg from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per couple for the buffet or $5 for just the entertainment.
Sunday
• The American Legion will host a breakfast where $1 of the $7 cost goes to the church youth group of your choice from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, potatoes, fruit, coffee and juice.
• Redeemer Lutheran Church will host a harvest dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Alden-Conger School. Menu includes turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, cranberry salad, rolls and homemade desserts. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children age 5 to 12 and free for children age 4 and under. Funds raised will go to the church’s property improvement fund.
