Rochester Century capitalizes on walks, tops baseball Tigers 11-0

Although the Rochester Century Panthers totaled 11 hits, it wasn’t the major difference in the ballgame.

&uot;The big story for us was walks,&uot; said Albert Lea baseball coach Joe Sczublewski, whose squad issued 10 walks while falling 11-0 to Century in a Big Nine game at Hayek Field Tuesday.

&uot;If we hadn’t walked anybody, it would have been a tight game,&uot; said Sczublewski. &uot;But we just set the table up for them. You can’t give a good team like that extra baserunners. We have to do a better job of throwing the ball across the plate.&uot;

The Tigers had only two hits, singles by Jared Butler and Donald Graves. Three Panther pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and four walks.

Graves pitched the first three innings and took the loss, giving up five earned runs. Preston Dahl allowed two earned runs through the next three innings and Josh Diaz was reached for a pair of earned runs in the seventh.

The Tigers turned two double plays. In the fourth, second baseman Brock Sorenson caught a line drive and doubled the runner at first. With the bases loaded in the sixth, the Tigers turned a 1-3-1 double play from Dahl to Travis Klatt to Ryan Truesdell.

The Tigers’ record fell to 2-15. Century, which won the Class AA state championship last spring and the American Legion World Series last summer, has lost twice this season.

The Tigers play Thursday at Austin.
