Powerful Mayo shuts out ALHS tennis boys

With the vaunted Rochester Mayo Spartans coming to town, the Albert Lea High School boys’ tennis team switched the lineup around.

It didn’t help.

Mayo, one of the best teams in the state, shut out the Tigers 7-0 in a Big Nine dual meet on the Southwest Middle School courts Tuesday.

The closest match was No. 3 doubles, where usual singles players Andrew Dyrdal and Greg Peterson went three sets before falling 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 6-4. Stephen Thorn and Micah Holt lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles while Kurtis Bohrnstedt and Conner Keyeski fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

The scores at singles: No. 1, Jon Hatcher, 6-0, 6-0; No. 2, Corey Dieser, 6-1, 6-0; No. 3, Jay Ackerman, 6-2, 6-4; No. 4, Eric Shahan, 6-2, 6-2.

The Tigers had no junior varsity victories.

&uot;Mayo showed us why they’re one of the top teams in the state,&uot; said Tigers co-coach Tom Dyrdal. &uot;They had a real solid lineup, a lot of technically-sound tennis players. I think some of our singles players had fun playing some doubles, and our doubles players made a game effort. Peterson and Dyrdal played an outstanding match. They were just a couple points away from winning the match.&uot;

The Tigers’ record fell to 2-8. They host Rochester John Marshall Thursday.
