Veronica Matthies, 90, Rochester

The funeral service for Veronica Matthies will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at the Catholic Church of All Saints, New Richland. The Rev. Thien Nguyen will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Friedrich Funeral Home in New Richland, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and one hour before the service at the church.

Veronica died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Madonna Towers, Rochester. She was 90 years old.

Veronica was born In St. Joe, Iowa, on Jan. 4, 1914, the daughter of Nicholas and Josephine (Fatz) Gudenberg. She was a 1932 graduate of New Richland High School and attended one year of Normal School in New Richland. She taught country school in the New Richland and Owatonna area for 13 years.

On June 30, 1947, Veronica was united in marriage with Orville Matthies. The couple farmed in Hartland Township where they raised livestock and crops. In 1980, son David took over the farm and Orville and Veronica moved to New Richland.

Veronica enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching and raising chickens.

She was especially fond of time spent with her family and grandchildren.

Veronica is survived by her three children: David (Diane) Matthies of New Richland, Mary Ann Matthies of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Michael (Sue) Matthies of Rochester; five grandchildren: Jami Habben, Holly and Christopher Matthies, and Brandon and Derek Matthies; two great-grandchildren: Chance and Kyla Douglas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville, in 2002; son, Jeffrey; four brothers: Nick, John, Joe and Al; and two sisters: Catherine Collins and Mary Gudenburg.
