When Marvel Nelson retired from working at St. John’s Lutheran Home 18 years ago, she kept showing up. Every day.
At the time, Nelson’s daughter was the volunteer coordinator at the home and encouraged her to be a volunteer.
Nelson is active in almost everything at St. John’s. She does a variety of things, like taking residents to entertainment programs, grocery shopping, helping write letters, taking people outside and just visiting with them, among many other things.
Nelson said it is satisfying to know she is helping residents’ lives be a bit more enjoyable, and in some cases, helping them live more independently.
&uot;I enjoy doing it,&uot; she said. &uot;I realize I am helping someone.&uot;
The 88-year-old volunteers five days a week, at most spending six hours per day. She said she likes to volunteer so much because she is able to and it keeps her active.
