Wells officer to get alcohol treatment

WELLS — A Wells police officer is on an unpaid two-week suspension for what the city’s administrator described as actions “unbecoming of an officer.”

Officer Alex Thostenson earlier this week accepted an employment agreement approved by the Wells City Council. It also requires that he complete an alcohol treatment program at Fountain Centers in Albert Lea, according to City Administrator Jeremy Germann.

If Thostenson does not complete the treatment, his job will be terminated, Germann said.

The action came about after an investigation by the Waseca County Sheriff’s Office into allegations involving Thostenson.

Though Germann would not describe the full nature of the allegations, he said the investigation looked into “two allegations of actions unbecoming of an officer and failure to report an investigation to a supervisor.”

Germann said the incidents took place while Thostenson was off duty and noted that drinking played a part, though he denied to expand further.

Germann did tell the Faribault County Register: “There were two reports of him drinking and driving while off-duty.” The newspaper stated the incidents were investigated but nothing criminal was found.

Aside from the two-week suspension, Thostenson will be on paid administrative leave until he has completed the treatment. He has until Jan. 12 to finish the program, according to the Register, and must adhere to other additional conditions.

These include abstaining from alcohol while he is employed with the city and being required to submit to alcohol testing at the city’s request after treatment.

The city will pay for half of the uninsured costs of alcohol treatment, not to exceed 10 percent of the total program cost.

Thostenson has been a full-time officer with the Wells Police Department for seven years and is also a former employee of the Minnesota State Patrol.

He worked part time for the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office as an on-call transportation deputy until June.
