HOLLANDALE — Turkeys are cooking, desserts are being made and the school is being decorated for the annual fall supper at Hollandale Christian School.

The supper will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the school. For a donation, people will be served turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, baked beans, baked apples, carrots, Chinese salad, cranberry sauce and many types of desserts.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for us as a school family to come together,” Principal Lisa Vos said.

Organizers expect about 1,000 people, the average amount per year. The fundraiser collects anywhere from $7,000 to $8,000. The money helps keep tuition costs low and pays for new library books, desks, chairs and other curriculum and school supplies. People come from all over the county for the supper, which has been benefiting the students since it began in 1982.

“The last thing we want is for families to not be able to afford tuition,” Jenny Iverson said.

Iverson, one of three organizers of the event, said it’s one of the schools two main fundraisers along with an auction in the spring.

“Every family in the school has a part in the supper,” Iverson said.

The school has kindergarten through eighth-grade attending, and some of the students help out at the dinner. The older students help with refilling drinks and clearing tables. Iverson said after the dinner ends everything is cleaned up before they leave that night.

Vos and parent volunteer Cindy Smeby were at the school Wednesday night making bars. In previous years all the desserts were donated, but with health regulations now all the food is being made at the school.

“The food is always very good,” Smeby said.

Vos said she enjoys seeing the kids’ anticipation in the days before the supper. She said it can be distracting for them to have the aromas of cooking turkeys and stuffing and all the volunteers running around the school.

“I like the air of excitement in the school,” Vos said.
