RWP goes 2-2 in world tournament

KIMBERLY, Wis. &045; The Richards Wood Products team finished 2-2 in pool play in the International Softball Congress World Tournament, just missing the championship round.

The pivotal game for RWP was its second, a 2-1 loss to Lafayette Pub of St. Louis, Mo.

The Hallman Twins of Waterloo, Ontario, who eliminated RWP 16-2 in game four, finished 4-0 to lead Pool D. Lafayette Pub also advanced to the championship round with a record of 3-1.

RWP opened with a 5-2 victory over the Saskatoon, Sask., Merchants.

Brett Richards and Shawn Hearn hit home runs for Geneva while Kyle Richardson went 2-for-3. Scott Collins and B.J. Boom had one hit apiece. Winning pitcher Rick Lang went all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Geneva took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning against Lafayette Pub, which tied it in the fifth and won it 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

Brett Richards and Kevin Bryan were both 2-for-3. Lang again went the distance, allowing one earned run on seven hits; he walked two and struck out six.

RWP rebounded to defeat the Bloomington, Ill. Stix 11-1 Tuesday night.

Jim Harms led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Brian Elliott was 2-for-2 with two walks, three RBIs and three runs scored and Brett Richards was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Scott Collins drove in a run with a single, scored a run and walked twice. Brad Elliott pitched four innings for the win.

After RWP took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Collins home run, the Hallman Twins got seven hits in a row to open their half of the inning while scoring six times. It was called after four and a half innings by the 10-run rule.

Scott McLeod was 2-for-2. Collins, Boom and Tomm Richards each had one hit. Brad Elliott took the loss.

The rest of the Geneva team included Brody Richards, Andy Van Wettering, Ryan Glynn and B.J. Boom. Brett Richards and Dave McLeod managed the team.
