It may not have best Chris Baas’s best performance in a golf tournament, but it was enough to win this year’s Albert Lea City Open.

Baas finished with a total of 175 strokes in the 45-hole competition, beating runner-up Mick Hockinson by only three strokes.

Baas and Hockinson were going neck-and-neck through the final championship flight, staying tied up until the final holes, where Baas was able to get the shots he needed to ensure a victory.

Along with Baas, other competitors thought that the City Open was a well-managed tournament, despite an hour-and-half delay due to severe weather that hit the area on Sunday. All were anxious to return to the course to finish the 45-hole competition.

Baas was impressed by all the tournament had to offer this year.

&uot; Both the Country Club and Green Lea were in great shape, the greens were terrific, and the competition was great this year,&uot; said Baas.

Women also had a tournament at both golf courses over the weekend. Winning this year was Jane Hanson, finishing with 170 strokes. Behind her was Vonda Rocklin with 175 strokes and Mindy Nelson with 177 strokes. Betty Ellertson won the first flight in the women’s competition as well.

Besides the flight tournaments, there were also flag competitions in both the women’s and men’s competitions at the Albert Lea Country Club Sunday. The events were longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin (CTP). On the women’s end, the longest drive winner was Marti Anderson on hole seven; Anderson also won CTP on the 10th hole. Longest putt went to Betty Ellertson on hole six.

On the men’s end of the tournament, longest drive went to Eli Schroeder on the third hole, CTP to Joe Sczubleski on the fifth and longest putt to Robert Friday on the 18th.
