NEW RICHLAND &045; So many times this spring and summer, Glenville-Emmons baseball teams were victimized by late-inning rallies that lifted opponents to victory.
This time, it looked like the G-E American Legion team might turn the tables.
Instead, it was another heartbreaking loss.
A double play killed a bases-loaded, seventh-inning rally for visiting G-E, and New Richland went on to score in the bottom of the eighth for a 6-5 decision in a sub-district tournament game at New Richland’s Legion Field.
It ended the season for G-E, which finished with a record of 5-12.
&uot;It was a tough loss,&uot; said coach Louie Toulouse. &uot;But it was a game either team could have won.&uot;
The visitors scored single runs in the first and third for an early lead, but the Jazz answered with one in its half of the third and put four runs on the board in the fourth. G-E tied it with three in the sixth.
The key play came in the seventh, when G-E loaded the bases with one out, but the double play ended it.
&uot;If we could have scored there, we probably would have won the game,&uot; said Toulouse. &uot;But that didn’t happen.&uot;
New Richland won it on a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth.
Isaiah Parry led G-E, going 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Mitch Meier was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Wade Flattum and Robert Flugum had G-E’s other hits.
Meier pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and absorbed the loss, giving up one earned run on four hits, walking four and striking out three. Michael Greibrok pitched the first five innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits; he walked one and fanned four.
