Herbert ‘Herb’ John Niebuhr, 95, Albert Lea

The funeral service for Herbert “Herb” John Niebuhr will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, at Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Jay Dahlvang will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, and one hour before the service at the church.
Herbert died on Saturday, June 28, 2003, at the Albert Lea Medical Center. He was 95 years old.
Herbert was born Feb. 16, 1909, in Mansfield, Minn., the son of Frederick W. and Lillian A. (Passer) Niebuhr. When he was six years old, the family moved from their farm to Albert Lea where he graduated from high school and attended Luther Academy. Herbert graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in business. Following graduation, he worked for Northrup King in Omaha, Neb.
Herbert was united in marriage with K. Elizabeth “Libby” Mortensen on Nov. 14, 1942, in San Diego, Calif., where Herbert was serving as a special agent for the FBI. They returned to Minnesota in 1945, and lived in Crystal. He was employed by Brown Steel Tank Company of Minneapolis until 1951, when they returned to Albert Lea. Herbert joined Emil Olson and Sons as an accountant and office manager. Herbert was a former president of the Albert Lea Junior Chamber of Commerce and a long time member of the Lions Club in Albert Lea. He was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School, and served as church council president and treasurer.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elizabeth, in 1999; two sisters: Vera in infancy, and Ardis (Mrs. Lloyd B.) Peterson; one brother, Alton; and Elizabeth’s parents.
Herbert is survived by one son, Fred Niebuhr and his wife Gerry of Edina; one daughter, Mary Ostrader Bauman and her husband Mel of Little Marais, Minn.; three grandchildren: Fred Ostrander, and Aimee and Emily Niebuhr; two sisters: Irene (Mrs. Ken) Lehmann of Albert Lea, and LaDonna (Mrs. Dale) Larson of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Harriet (Mrs. Gar) Mortensen of Albert Lea; and many nieces and nephews.
