Music in the park programs start this weekend

The weekly free programs of live music in Edgewater Park &045; an annual tradition in Albert Lea &045; begin this weekend.

Music for this week’s program will be provided by the &uot;Skipper&uot; Berg Band from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the park bandshell. Ethnic Scandinavian, German and Bohemian old-time waltzes and polkas will be featured. The band features Lowell Berg on trumpet, Ben Bednar on saxophone, Richard Alger on clarinet, Eugene Salisburg on accordion, Ben Stuart on bass and Larry Weberg on drums.

Skipper Berg and his former Viking Accordion Band were well-known as one of the foremost polka bands and played at ballrooms and radio stations throughout the area.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, June 6

-The works of Jaclyn Garlock of Clear Lake, Iowa, are being exhibited at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave. Her works are representational paintings with intense color and contrast and are very large in size. Gallery hours are from noon-4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.

Saturday, June 7

-The Albert Lea Family Y 25th Annual Fountain Lake 5 will be held at Brookside Education Center. The five-mile run begins at 9 a.m. The race is one lap around Fountain Lake, finishing at Brookside. Entry in the race includes a T-shirt, water station, post race refreshments and awards to first, second and third place in each age division. Cost of the race is $20 until race day. The age divisions include 18 and under male and female divisions, 19-29 male and female divisions, 30-39 male and female divisions, 40-49 male and female divisions, 50-59 male and female divisions, and 60+ male and female divisions. There is also an award for the top male and top female. After the five-mile race, children can participate in the fun runs. The fun runs include a half mile race for those children ages 5 and up with ribbons to all finishers. It is free to all children. There is a cost of $7 for those children who want a T-shirt. There will be a toddler trot for children ages 5 and under. This will consist of short dashes to the finish line. Ribbons will be awarded to all participants. -The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market is open in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street from 9 a.m.-noon.

-The 12th annual Take-A-Kid Fishing Day will be held from 9 a.m.-noon near Katherine Island on Fountain Lake. Kids should be 16 years of age or younger. There will be fishing tips, safety tips, prizes, refreshments and fishing. No license is required on this day. The event is sponsored by the Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club in cooperation with the Conservation Department of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

-A singles’ dance, hosted by the Fairmont Area Singles, will be held at the Golden Bubble Ballroom in Wells from 8 p.m.-midnight. The Ray Sands Orchestra will play. Admission is $7 per person.

Sunday, June 8

-The Cloverleaf and LakeView Lions will hold their annual flight breakfast from 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea Airport. Cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.
