Norbert V. Schacko, age 85, of Kiester, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the United Lutheran Church in Walters. The Rev. Don Rose will officiate. Visitation will be today, April 29, at the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells from 4-8 p.m., and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Walters Cemetery in Walters.

He was born Dec. 3, 1917, in Foster Township, Faribault County, the son of Albert W. and Julia (Tatge) Schacko.

Norbert was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Walters. He attended grade school in Walters District #83. He graduated from Alden High School. He married Betty Jane Iverson on Feb. 20, 1941, in Walters. He farmed south of Walters on the family farm until he retired in 1979 and the couple moved into Kiester. He was a member of the Walters Creamery Board and charter member of the Kiester Lions Club. He was a member of the former St. John’s Lutheran Church, its church council, and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Brotherhood. He was member of United Lutheran Church in Walters and had served on the church council. He played on several softball teams including Walters and Alden. He played on the church dartball team. He enjoyed pool, bowling, golf, horseshoes and being an armchair coach of any sport.

He is survived by two daughters: Bonnie and husband Larry Trampel of Albert Lea, and Vicky and husband Lamoyne Krohnberg of Walters; six grandchildren: Carol and husband Ron Farris, Roger and wife Melissa Trampel, Barbara and husband John Larson, Stacy and wife Becky Krohnberg; Terry and wife Sue Krohnberg, and Brady Krohnberg; eight great-grandchildren: Katey, Emily and Andy Krohnberg, Makayla and Cody Krohnberg, Aaron Farris, and Devin and Adam Trampel; two sisters: Ardis Wacholz of Albert Lea, and Juanice (husband Daryl) Smith of Alden; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty, in 1990; great-granddaughter, Abby Krohnberg, in 1999, and brother-in-law, Elmer Wacholz, in 2003.
