A glimmer of sunlight may shine on the Glenville-Emmons school district after weeks of stormy weather.

&uot;We are possibly going to call back four teachers,&uot; Todd Chessmore, superintendent for the district, said.

Monday night, the school board will vote on whether to reinstate four of the 13 teachers who were laid off last week. Chessmore said he didn’t know which teachers would be called back, but he guessed most of them would be from the secondary school.

The Glenville-Emmons school district has been faced by many issues including a failed referendum, building closings and budget cuts.

In the last two weeks they closed Emmons Middle School and cut $824,740 from their 2003-2004 budget.

This cut meant the board had to lay off 13 teachers and eight non-certified staff.

Chessmore said that with the reworking of some areas of school finances the board will have room to hire four back.

&uot;We are looking at restructuring different programs,&uot; he said. &uot;The teaching staff said they would give up their staff development money, which is around $100,000, to help hire people back.&uot;

The district might also do some &uot;restructuring to the administration,&uot; according to Chessmore. He said that the plan for restructuring is not finished and did not share what that might include.

&uot;We won’t be cutting anything,&uot; he said.

Monday’s meeting will also give a &uot;memorandum of understanding&uot; for teachers who might retire early from the district, Chessmore said.

He hopes the hiring back of these teachers might spark some positivity for the district.

&uot;We’re excited that we’re starting to move forward in a positive direction,&uot; Chessmore said.

&uot;We’re finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.&uot;
